Lake Kourna is the only freshwater lake in Crete. Lake Kourna in ancient times was known by the name Korisia, but later took its current name from the Arabic word for lake.

It is located in a very beautiful location, in a hollow between hills, about 4km away from Georgioupolis in the prefecture of Chania (western Crete). It covers an area of 579 hectares and is generally shallow with a maximum depth of 22.5 meters, while it is about 20 meters higher than the sea
