Arkadiou Monastery is 23 kilometers from the city of Rethymno and its first complete fortress form was created in the last period of the Venetian rule. The most important part of the Arkadiou Monastery is the central two-aisled church dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior (one aisle), and to Saints Constantine and Helen (the other aisle), which is surrounded by a very thick courtyard wall within which there are various auxiliary buildings. On the roofs of these buildings are ramparts, (parapets), with watchtowers and rifle ports.
