Ancient Eleftherna is the most important archaeological site of the prefecture of Rethymno. Since 1985, the University of Crete has been carrying out systematic excavations every summer and the findings so far are numerous and impressive.
It has been continuously inhabited since the 2nd millennium BC. until the late Roman, proto-Byzantine and Byzantine years (13th century AD). The advantages of the place were the fortified position, the good climate and in general the existence of all the conditions for habitation (water sources, arable land, land for grazing and logging, limestone stone for building).
Since the summer of 2016, the new museum of Eleftherna has been operating, which is 15 kilometers from the hotel.
